Stress-Free Treatment with Dr. Eggleston

For many patients, visiting the dentist can be a frightening experience. This condition is known as dental anxiety, or dental phobia, and it prevents up to 20 percent of Americans from seeking the treatment they need.

Skipping your dental appointments increases your risk of developing serious oral health issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, and infection. Additionally, if you’re too scared to see your dentist, you may miss out on the major benefits of dental implants. If you’re one of these patients, Dr. Eggleston offers oral conscious sedation to help you relax in the dental chair.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation is a highly effective method of sedation dentistry. Instead of inhaling a gas or having a needle inserted into your arm, you’ll take a simple pill an hour or two before your appointment. By the time you get to our Turlock office, the effects will already be kicking in and we can start your procedure. You’ll remain awake and responsive under oral sedation, though you’ll have little to no memory of your treatment later.

Benefits of Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation offers several unique benefits, including:

  • Effective — You’ll feel a wave of relaxation and euphoria spread through your body that will help you remain calm.
  • Safe — The medication doses are easily monitored to ensure your safety.
  • No IV — This method doesn’t involve any injections.
  • Conscious — You’ll never lose consciousness or fall asleep under oral sedation. However, you won’t remember your experience, which helps to ease dental anxiety.

How To Prepare For Oral Conscious Sedation

To prepare for oral conscious sedation, it’s important to follow the steps given to you by Dr. Eggleston to ensure the process is both safe and effective.

  • Get A Ride Ahead of Time – Since you take the medication before you arrive, it’s essential that you arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to our office. You’ll also need a ride home, as the effects of the medication may linger after your procedure.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothing – Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes during your procedure. This will make it easier for our team to check your blood pressure and provide care while you’re sedated.
  • Fast Prior To Taking Your Sedative –  In order for your procedure to be carried out safely, you will be asked to fast anywhere from six to twelve hours prior to taking your sedative. It’s important that you refrain from eating or drinking anything during this period or there’s significant risk of aspiration, infection, and postoperative vomiting.
